Single-pass and double-pass opacity monitors both measure how much smoke or particulate matter blocks a light beam. The key difference is the number of times the light crosses the process—and that difference affects the system layout, optical path and best-fit applications.
What Is a Single-Pass Opacity Monitor?
A single-pass monitor places a light emitter on one side of a stack, duct or process opening and a detector on the opposite side. The beam crosses the process once. The controller compares the received light with the clear-path reference and calculates opacity.
Single-pass systems are typically compact, straightforward to install and effective for process control, smoke alarms and continuous indication where a dual-beam regulatory design is not required. EMS offers two single-pass options:

- Guardian: selectable smoke-opacity alarm designed to energize relay contacts at a chosen set point.
What Is a Double-Pass Opacity Monitor?
In a double-pass monitor, the transceiver sends light across the process to a reflector. The light returns across the same process to the transceiver, so it encounters the smoke or dust stream twice. The system accounts for the doubled optical path when calculating the reported opacity.
The EMS WatchDog PS-1 and the standard EMS WatchDog are dual-pass systems for continuous stack monitoring. Both meet or exceed U.S. EPA 40 CFR Part 60, Appendix B, Performance Specification 1 and ASTM D6216. The standard WatchDog adds 3–50 ft physical path capability and a traditional panel controller, while the WatchDog PS-1 provides a 5.7-inch color touchscreen with expanded trends and diagnostics.

Does Double-Pass Mean “More Accurate”?
Not automatically. Accuracy depends on the complete system: optical design, detector stability, alignment, calibration, installation location, maintenance and suitability for the application. Single-pass and double-pass systems are different tools. The right question is whether the monitor’s design, range, outputs and compliance capabilities match the job.
For example, a crematory operator who needs a relay when smoke reaches a selected opacity may be well served by the Guardian. A plant that needs continuous single-pass process information may choose the WatchDog 800. A facility whose permit calls for an EPA Performance Specification 1 continuous opacity monitoring system can evaluate the touchscreen WatchDog PS-1 or the standard WatchDog, including its 3–50 ft path capability and traditional panel controller.
How Optical Path Length Affects Selection
Opacity is measured across a defined path. Stack or duct width, mounting-port location and the instrument’s supported path length must be reviewed before ordering. A double-pass instrument sends light across the physical opening twice, but reports opacity according to its configured measurement and stack-exit requirements.
Alignment and clean optics are also essential. Misalignment, dirty windows or inadequate purge air can reduce the amount of light reaching the detector and create unreliable readings. EMS can review drawings, port dimensions and process conditions before installation.
Compliance Requirements Come First
Do not select a monitor solely from a product name or general application list. Review the facility’s permit, applicable federal or state requirements, required outputs, reporting method and certification obligations. Performance Specification 1 applications may require installation testing, certification and ongoing quarterly audits.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a single-pass monitor be used for continuous measurement?
Yes. Single-pass describes the optical arrangement, not whether the instrument measures continuously. The WatchDog 800 provides continuous opacity information for supported applications.
Is the Guardian a continuous emissions monitoring system?
The Guardian is designed primarily as a selectable smoke-opacity detector and relay alarm. It should not be substituted for a PS-1 continuous opacity monitoring system when that standard is required.
Which EMS monitor meets EPA PS-1?
